Story
The Dutch Shepherd's role during World War II reflects its remarkable resilience and versatility. Originating as a hardworking farm dog in the Netherlands, this breed faced near extinction during the war due to the harsh conditions and disruption of breeding programs. As the German occupation took hold, many Dutch Shepherds perished from starvation or were requisitioned by the German military for various tasks, including messaging and guard duties. The conflict halted traditional breeding efforts, and with the loss of numerous bloodlines, the breed's survival hung in the balance.
Despite these challenges, the Dutch Shepherd proved its worth on the battlefield, serving alongside soldiers with loyalty and courage. Their intelligence and trainability made them valuable assets, often used to carry critical messages through dangerous terrains or to provide security in occupied areas. After the war, dedicated breeders worked tirelessly to revive the breed, introducing new bloodlines to diversify the gene pool and prevent its disappearance. This period of recovery highlights the breed's enduring spirit, which we honor in our "Resistance Roast," a tribute to their unyielding strength during one of history's darkest times.
Today, the Dutch Shepherd's legacy endures, with its numbers slowly rebounding thanks to the efforts of enthusiasts. The breed's wartime contributions and post-war revival embody the themes of perseverance and duty, qualities we aim to reflect in every cup of this medium-dark roast. Sourced from Colombia and Ethiopia, this coffee blend offers an earthy flavor with subtle spice, mirroring the rugged determination of the Dutch Shepherds who served during WWII.
